Netgear Wireless Router: How to Setup without Installation Disc

Do you want to re-setup your Netgear wireless router but don’t have the installation CD that came with it initially? It is common that the installation CD is misplaced and is not available at the time of need. So, what can be done? It’s simple. You can manually setup your wireless device without any trouble. See the instructions below:

Manual Setup Guide:

·         Power off your computer as well as the internet modem and disconnect their power cords from the electricity outlet.
·         Find the Ethernet cable that connects your computer to the modem and unplug its end from the computer.
·         Plug the taken out end into the Ethernet port at the back of your router.
·         Plug one end of the Ethernet wire (which came with the router) into the ‘LAN 1’ port at the back of your router. Now plug the second end into the Ethernet port at the back of your computer. It is the same port from which you initially ran an Ethernet cable to the internet modem.
·         Connect the power cord back to the modem and power it on. Wait for 2 or 3 minutes for the modem to turn on fully.
·         Connect the router’s power cord to the outlet and power it on. Again, wait for 2-3 minutes for it to turn on fully and detect the modem.
·         Plug the power cord back to your computer and to an outlet and power it on. Make sure that you have all the lights lit on your router. If any light is not lit and re-check the entire connection following the abovementioned procedure.
·         Now that all the lights are lit on your router and modem, and the computer is fully rebooted, open your web browser viz. Internet Explorer or Firefox etc.
·         Type ‘www.routerlogin.net’ or ‘192.168.0.1’ in the address bar of your browser and hit ‘Enter’ on the keyboard.

 ·         This will bring up the router login window, key in the username and password that came with the router documents. By default, ‘admin’ is the username and ‘password’ is the password respectively. However, refer to your router docs. before entering anything. If you changed your username and password in the previous setup then enter those otherwise the router will not let you login.
·         Click on the ‘Login’ button or ‘OK’ or hit ‘Enter’ on the keyboard
·         This will take you to the Netgear wireless router configuration window; make whatever changes you want to on this screen. When finished exit the window.

How to Access Netgear Router Login

If you are setting Netgear router the first time, or have reformatted your computer than you must login to your router to access/change the settings.

Below are the steps that will help you access or modify your Netgear Router Settings

  1. Power on your computer
  2. If you are setting up the router for the first time or want to change the configuration, connect your desktop/laptop (if you only have one computer) to the router with an Ethernet cable.
  3. If you already have a wireless connection set up (with a desktop already connected to the router with an Ethernet cable) and just want to change the configuration settings from a second computer, you don’t need to use an Ethernet cable again.
  4. Launch your internet browser viz. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox etc. (whichever you use).
  5. Type ‘192.168.1.1’ or ‘192.168.0.1’ (without quotes) in the address bar of the browser and hit ‘Enter’ on the keyboard.
  6. This will direct you to the router login page, prompting you to enter the username and password. If it doesn’t bring up the login page, type ‘www.routerlogin.net’ (without quotes) in the address bar and hit ‘Enter’.
  7. Type in the username and password in the respective fields and click on OK/Login whatever you see on the window to login. Check your router docs. for the username and password, or if you have changed the information then enter the new one.
  8. When you see the configuration screen, setup or modify your configuration settings as desired
  9. When done with the settings, exit out the window by clicking on the ‘X’ button. This will log you out automatically of the configuration screen.
Additional Tidbits:

You can also try these IP addresses viz. ‘192.168.10.1’, ‘192.168.100.1’, ‘192.168.0.5’, ‘10.1.10.1’
You must check your login information such as username and password before entering anything. The information usually comes printed on a sticker at the bottom of the Netgear router. Usually the username is ‘admin’ and the password is ‘password’ (both without quotes) but you must check it with your router doc. or unless you have changed it.

If you are setting up your router for the first time and the password that came with the router doc. doesn’t work, you can try ‘Password’ with ‘P’ capital or ‘1234’ or ‘admin’.

If you already have your wireless router setup and have got your computer reformatted, you don’t need to login to the router. Simply connect to the wireless connection using your security key such WAP. This will be applicable in the case if you don’t want to modify the already configured settings.
