Common Dell Printer Troubleshooting Steps

Dell printers do a pretty good job when it comes to printing. However, despite their reliability and best of the efforts that users put in, dell printers often malfunction. They of course are not exempted from the misfortune of malfunctioning at least at some point in time their lifecycle. Since things go wrong because they have to with the period of time, Dell rolls out updates, patches, tweaks, and enhancements for its Dell printers.
Besides these things what Dell printers need is a handy Dell printer support guide that can help users instantly and when needed, even during the odd times. So here I am discussing some points to help you fix common Dell printer problems.
Step1: If your Dell printer stops printing, check the paper tray first. There is a possibility that the paper tray might have become empty. In this case, you can reload the paper tray and then start printing. If the paper tray has some papers in it, check a few more things. Since a Dell printer pulls a paper only from one side and not from both the sides, the other side of it stays immobile. So if the other side of a paper is problematic, it might obstruct it from being pulled inside for printing.
Step2: To get rid of this problem, check that a paper is plain with no projected or fluffed edges. If the paper seems problematic, pull it out from the stack as it will obstruct the paper path and lead to the paper jam problem. Eventually the Dell printer will stop printing. Also never fan the paper stack. Some users often fan the paper stack to prevent papers from sticking to each other. This leads to the major paper feed and jam problem.
Step3: If the print quality of the printout is poor and there are lines running through the text, it indicates that the ink has dried up, clogging the printer nozzle. Clean up the printer. To do so, hit the Options button on your Dell printer> select Cartridges> hit the + button. When the Clean option appears, hit the Select button to start the cleaning. Wait for the process to finish. When done, print a test page.
Step4: If this method does not soften the ink and the print quality remains poor, remove the tone/ink cartridge. Take a soft cloth or cotton swab, dip it into alcohol or hot water, and rub it slowly and carefully against the print head. Also rub it carefully underside the printer nozzle. When done, place the cartridge back in and test a print page. The print quality should improve and the lines running through the text should disappear. Besides, check the cartridge. If it is empty or near-empty, either refill it or replace it.
Step5: Update printer drivers. Windows 7 or Vista users can let their operating system search for Dell printer drivers online. Windows 7/Vista, when instructed, can automatically search for right printer drivers and download and install them automatically to a computer. Users simply have to reboot their computers afterwards.

Step6: If you are using Windows XP, you can update drivers the 7 or Vista way. You can also manually download and install drivers from the Dell website. To do so, open your web browser and visit the Dell website. Browse to the Drivers & Downloads section and look for the drivers for the Windows XP version.

Step7: Download the printer driver file to the computer and exit the browser window. Click the Start menu> right click My Computer> select Manage. Select Device Manager> highlight the Hardware tab. Click the Update Driver button, browse for the driver file that was just downloaded, and select it. Wait for the drivers to be updated. When done, restart the computer.
Step8: If it’s a wired printer, check the physical connection of the USB cable. Verify that the cable is not loose from either end. Reseat the cable firmly into the dedicated ports of the computer and printer. When done, reboot your computer and Dell printer as well. Start printing again to check if the problem is fixed or not.
Step9: If it’s a wireless printer, verify that the Internet connection is active and working. If the Internet connection is facing a temporary network glitch, wait for it to be fixed by the ISP. If there is no network glitch and the wireless connection seems to be disconnected, check the settings on the computer and the router. Update drivers in the above mentioned manner.
Step10: Run a printer troubleshooter to troubleshoot and fix any common Dell computer problem. Microsoft has designed a Microsoft Fix it printer troubleshooter for all Dell printer models. Visit the Microsoft website and search for the MicrosoftFixit.Printing.Run.exe tool. Download it and save the file to computer. (See Also how to reset BIOS password in a Dell computer)

Step11: When done, close the browser window. Thereafter, look for the downloaded file and run it. Hit the Next button, accept the Microsoft user license agreement, and then install the tool. When finished, run a scan for the common Dell printer errors. Afterwards, prompt the tool to fix them.

Steps for Removing Sysguard Virus

Chances are-like other people-your PC might also be infected with Sysguard virus. Sysguard is another fake virus removal software that when enters your computer hijacks your browser and stops Task Manager or other applications from running. The program prevents its detection and removal and makes things difficult for you as much as it can. Considering this, I have compiled the below mentioned steps to remove the dangerous software from your computer just in some time. (See Also Virus Removal Support)
Step1: If you are able to access Task Manager, open it and click the Processes tab. Locate any process with the name sysguard.exe or random characters such as 12345.exe or 11.exe etc., select it click End Process. Carefully scan rest of the processes. If there are more such processes, kill them also.
Step2: If you are not able to kill such processes, connect to the Internet and download a process killer like RKill, explorer.exe, or PsKill. Save the file and unzip its contents to another file. Open it and install the tool. Run the tool afterwards, select the suspicious processes, and kill them.
Step3: If you are unable to access Task Manager or go online for that matter, shut down your computer. Restart it in Safe Mode with Networking. To do so, while the computer is restarting, start tapping the F8 key on the keyboard to get into the boot menu. Use the Down arrow key to reach Safe Mode with Networking and then hit Enter.
Step4: Exit all the windows including Task Manager. Click the Start menu> go to My Computer> C:\ drive> Program Files> and Temp. Look for sysguard.exe or random character file in the Temp folder, right click on it and click Delete to delete it. Repeat the procedure for other such files. Exit the Temp folder window.
Step5: Click the Start button> My Computer> C:\ drive> Documents and Settings> your user profile> Local Settings> and Temp. Locate the Sysguard and other random character files such as 172.exe, balloon.exe, vru.exe, install.exe, and not_detect-200812\sysguarad.exe and remove them. If you don’t see Local Settings in your user profile, click the Tools tab> select Folder Options.
Step6: Click the View tab> select the Show hidden files and folders option.  It will now display all the folders in your user profile. Navigate to the Temp folder and do the needful. When done, go to the Application Data folder and repeat the procedure.
Step7: Close all the windows and click the Start menu> Run. Type ‘regedit’ in the Open box and click OK. On Windows Registry Editor, take a registry backup before modifying the registry. It is a must-to-do procedure as it will save your data from being lost due to wrong modifications that can lead to system crash or other severe problems.

Step8: You can use the built-in Export option in the File menu in Registry Editor to back up your registry. This will launch the Import Export Wizard which will help you export your registry and restore it later on or when needed. Another option to back up your registry is to create a system restore point. It will help you restore your computer to an earlier time or date when things were fine.
Step9: Once you are done with registry backup, open Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftware> Sysguard. Remove the Sysguard folder and confirm its deletion. Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> Software> FolderA> Keyname. Delete this key in the FolderA. Similarly go to FolderB and FolderC under Software to delete other such keys.
Step10: When done, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER> Software> Microsoft> Windows NT> CurrentVersion> Winlogon> Shell [%Windows%]> sysguard> sysguard.exe. Remove the last two entries from the branch. Similarly remove sysguard> sysguard.exe from the Shell [%PROGRAM_FILES%] branch. Exit Registry Editor and other windows.
Step11: Connect to the Internet and download free versions of Spybot Search and Destroy and Hijackthis programs from their respective websites. Save the files and unzip their contents into other files. Open them one by one and install both the programs. Open the first program and update it. Now run a full system scan and wait until it completes. When finished, prompt the tool to delete all the infected files that were found in scanning.
Step12: Repeat this procedure with the other tool also. Once you have run scans from both the tools, close them. Open your security program (antivirus or anti-spyware whichever you have on your computer) and update it. Wait until all the updates are duly downloaded and installed. When done, run a full system scan. Prompt your security software to delete any infection that were found during the scan. (If you don't have an antivirus, you can buy McAfee here)
Step13: Close all the windows and reboot your computer. Windows will load up normwally now. Do not press any key during the reboot process. In future, never download free utilities from torrent websites as they may contain such malicious viruses or Trojans etc.
***You must be logged in as an administrator to make some of the above mentioned changes. Your user profile is the account that you have created to log in to your computer. Admin is the master account from which all the accounts including yours can be managed.
***If you do not want to carry out this procedure on your own as it may prove difficult, take help of an expert online virus removal support service.

How to Run Disk Defragmenter in Windows 8

Bah! Windows 8 is not what Windows used to look like. How do I go to Control Panel? How do I clean up my disk? From where do I open up another tab in my web browser? You must be going in circles over how you will use your computer now especially if you have had an experience with Windows 8 with an upgrade plan in mind. With the onset of Windows 8, it has become a bit difficult for many users to use their computers the way they have been using it from a long, really long time. But then again change is must and that’s what Microsoft realized that it’s for good.
Other than the Windows 8 features that I have discussed in my previous blogs, today I am going to tell you about how you can run Disk Defragmenter in Windows 8. It’s the basic yet powerful feature in Windows systems to organize disk space for better use. It’s good that Microsoft didn’t give feature a miss in Windows 8. Check these methods given below and learn to defrag your disk in Windows 8: (See Also Windows 8 upgrade support)
1. To defragment you disk, hover your mouse around to bring up the Charm bar. Click Search to open the Search bar. Type ‘defragment’ (without quotes) in the Search bar and hit Enter. Even if you do not hit Enter, you will see search results in left hand side. If no results appear using ‘Defragment’, you can type ‘optimize drive’ in the Search bar.
2. The Search bar is identical to Windows 7’s. Click Defragment and optimize your drives in the left hand side and then click Settings. In the Optimize Drives window, select a drive to defrag and then click the Optimize button. (See Also how to schedule disk defragment in Windows 7)
3. You can also click Analyze before clicking Optimize if you want to analyze the drive. It will begin the disk defragmentation process. Wait while it finishes. You can note this that Windows 8 automatically optimizes your disks on a weekly basis. So there is no need to manually do it.
4. You can also change your defragment/optimize settings by clicking the Change settings button. Adjust your settings and then click OK. (See Also Windows 8 upgrade essentials)
5. Another method of defragmenting drives is from command line in Command Prompt. This method is incredibly fast for defragmenting your drives. It speeds up the process of defragmentation and lets you organize your drives faster.
6. Press the Windows and R keys to bring up Run utility. Type ‘cmd’ in the Run window and click OK. This will open up Command Prompt. Type ‘defrag’ and hit Enter. It will open up a list of defragment options on the Command Prompt window.

7. Make sure that you are logged in with admin rights; otherwise you won’t be able to defrag your drive(s). You can use these commands to analyze and defrag your drive. If you want to analyze your disk before defragment, type ‘defrag –a’ and hit Enter.
8. If you want to defrag your entire C:\ drive, you can type ‘defrag C: -v -w’ and hit Enter. If you want to defrag any other drive, simple replace C: drive with its name and hit Enter. If you want to defrag multiple drives simultaneously, type ‘defrag /r’ and hit Enter.
9. If you want to defrag each and every item, type ‘defrag -w’ and hit Enter. You can also print the defrag results by typing ‘defrag –v’. Exit Command Prompt when done. (See Also What's New in Windows 8)

How to Fix ‘Windows 7 Not Responding’ Problem

When running Windows 7, you may find it not responding due to an unresponsive program like Microsoft Outlook, web browser, antivirus, plug-in etc. or corrupt registry files, lack of minimum system requirements, damage drivers, fragmented files or hardware issue etc. Other these reasons, this problem can occur after you upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista or earlier version. Check the steps given below and fix if your Windows 7 doesn’t respond:
Step 1: Force shut down your Windows 7 computer when it’s not responding.  Be aware that a force shutdown may cause the unsaved data loss. Restart your computer and defragment your hard drive. Click the Start button> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragment. Make sure that you are logged on as an administrator to your Windows 7 computer. Otherwise, you won’t be able to defragment your hard disk.

Your Laptop Could Start a Fire: Laptop Do’s and Don’ts

“A couple lost their 25 year old son in a fire at home on June 4th. The son who had graduated with MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison two weeks earlier had come home for a while. He had lunch with his dad at home and decided to go back to clean up his hostel room. His father told him to wait, to meet his mother, before he went back for a few days. He decided to take a nap while waiting for his mom to come back home from work. Sometime later their neighbors called 911 when they saw black smoke coming out of the house.
Unfortunately, the 25 years old died in the three year old house. It took several days of investigation to find out the cause of the fire. It was determined that the fire was caused by the laptop resting on the bed. When the laptop was on the bed, the cooling fan did not get the air to cool the computer and that is what caused the fire. He did not even wake up to get out of the bed because he died of breathing in carbon monoxide”.
This a real tragic incident that took place last year when a fresh MBA graduate was taken down by carbon monoxide, a toxic gas when he left his laptop resting on the bed and fell asleep without noticing that it’s not cooling down properly. As the incident narrated above, the laptop started fire due to overheating following the halted cooling fan. Being a human, the incident shook me badly. Being a technology writer, it gave me an insight into how people actually use their laptops, desktops, or other peripherals to make their life comfortable, or rather uncomfortable. Eventually, it compelled me to write this article on laptop safety tips.
Despite being our lives, laptops have their own downsides that we often overlook unless we meet with an accident like the one described above. Devices like laptops have been playing an important role in our lives from the beginning till date. We rely so much them for every single task and reason viz. from online shopping, checking bank or credit card statements, sending and receiving emails, obtaining information (Googling or Binging etc.), paying bills, sending documents, sharing files or folders, developing apps (for developers), arranging online meetings, social networking, voice or video chatting, to instant messaging among other things.
Why do we rely completely on laptops? It is because they integrate well with our day-to-day life in which we don’t have much time to do anything else other than the regular professional or personal stuff. Their portability keeps us moving and connected on the go. It is certainly impossible to carry a desktop along when on the go, but a laptop certainly makes way with us in a restaurant, office, school, plane, train, bus, taxi, platform, and even in a foreign country. Benefits are limitless but as I said above, laptops have their own disadvantages if they are not tended to properly. Here I have compiled a list of do’s and don’ts when using a laptop. Check it out and make sure that you never hurt yourself using your laptop.
Do’s and Don’ts
Never place and leave your laptop on bed, table or other such thing that prevents the cooling fan from properly working. You must place your laptop on a laptop stand to make sure that the cooling fan properly works and it keeps venting hot air to cool it down. There are many types of laptop stands available in the market to suit your budget or space requirements. So, buy one and place your laptop on it to avoid meeting with unnatural accidents.
If you cannot use a laptop stand, make sure that whatever article you place the laptop on has some distance between it and the article, leaving enough space for the heat to vent. Never leave your laptop plugged in the electricity outlet for more than the required time. A sudden power surge can blow up your laptop or at least its battery, causing fire. Never leave your laptop unattended, especially when it is plugged for charging in the electricity outlet.
Never place your laptop in proximity of electric equipments (like a lamp) that emit heat. Also, never eat or drink beside your laptop to prevent it from physical damage like discoloration. Keep your laptop always away from the reach of your children. If you don’t want to keep your children away from your laptop, teach them about the basic safety measures and how to use it properly.
Shut down your laptop properly. When done, make sure that no smoke is spewing out of it after it has shut down. Visually inspect that no cable of a connecting device like printer, router etc. is broken, exposing your laptop to a risk of burn or damage. Make sure that you do not store anything in between the laptop keys.
If you are disassembling your laptop for repair purpose, make sure that you do it in proper way. Sometimes, heating components like RAM modules or battery can give you mild shock. Make sure that you refer to your laptop manual for assistance or contact your laptop manufacturer for that matter.

Top Applications for Windows 8

What are applications? Applications, better known as Apps are software programs that run on computers, phones, tablets, or any such electronic devices. Apps help users perform their routine or rare tasks quickly and easily. For example, iPhone has a photo sharing app that lets you share your photos quickly on Facebook, Twitter, or any such website. Apps are very useful and powerful tools to keep you in the loop and know and let you organize your life. With that in mind, Microsoft has also introduced apps in its much-anticipated OS ‘Windows 8’. I am going to discuss two wonderful and useful apps that can help you stay updated and organized all the time without hassles and making much effort.
Wordpress – Microsoft took a revolutionary step by launching the Wordpress app to the Windows Store. The metro-style app is designed for those bloggers and readers who like to have the original, fresh, straight-from-the-press content for sharing and re-sharing them. You can like, follow, blog, or re-blog any content directly from the Wordpress website.
Besides, you can share content, link, quotes, or photos straight from any application in Windows 8 to your personal blog. If you are an avid blogger, Wordpress app is here for you to instantly write content, publish it and share across all the apps via email, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram etc. The app integrates Semantic Zoom, a gesture that lets you overview worth of posts by dates. You can download the app (it’s of course a free app) from the Windows Store to start blogging, reading, or sharing the best, original, quality content from your favorite Wordpress site. If you need help downloading or using the app, you can contact Windows 8 support.
Evernote – Remember the sticky notes that you use to jot down an important task! It definitely reminds you of wishing someone birthday, buying groceries on returning home, or assigning task to your junior colleague among other things but in a duller manner! You may also be habitual of creating an alarm or reminder in your Smartphone or iPhone to help remember or take note of anything that ever seems important to you. Keeping this in mind, Microsoft launched the Evernote app to Window 8. It simplifies your task of remembering anything, everything anywhere in your world.
It’s time to get past sticky notes, reminders! If you ever need to make a note of anything, use Evernote and experience a rich Metro-style graphics experience to remember everything from Sunday Brunch, birthdays, restaurant lists, recipes, to important office assignments. Unlike sticky notes or reminders, Evernote will automatically sync your notes among your PC, Smartphone, and tablet etc. for you to remember everything whether on-the-go or in your home.
The app will also help you find wine labels and whiteboard photos and capture design and idea inspiration for creating rich, graphics-based notes. With Evernote, you can stay organized wherever you are and whatever you are doing. What’s more, this is again a free app that will cost you nothing but offer you everything that will help you remember even a small thing in your life.

It will make sure that users can not only access their accounts (SkyDrive) from a Metro-style application running Windows 8 but also upload, open, share, and save their files from wherever they want.

Users will simply have to register their email address on a Windows 8 computer to start using SkyDrive. Once the email address is registered, users can store their files on SkyDrive and every Windows 8 computer or device will automatically update the saved files or changes made to them in the later course of time. (See Also Windows 8 upgrade essentials)
Windows 8 will also offer a convenient drag and drop interface for saving and recovering SkyDrive files on the Desktop. There will be a conventional SkyDrive Desktop application, which will be managed through Windows Explorer and accessible through Microsoft Office and other such Desktop applications. Windows 8 will also enable users to access their files remotely whenever they are away from their home computer. Those who have chosen to save their files on their computer’s hard disk drive will be able to access it from a remote location. To do so, users will need an alternate authentication code, which will be sent to them by Microsoft on either their mobile phone or an alternating email address. (See Also major differences between Windows 8 and 7)
2. Windows Start Search – Since the Start button has been dropped from the Metro-style interface, the useful Windows Start Search app has also been shifted on the right hand side to offer users a neater experience. The Windows Start Search utility appears only when you drift your mouse on the screen.

Otherwise, it remains hidden to make the user interface look more spacious. Besides, the Search utility has been improved to offer a more customized search. You can now search for and open files, folders, apps etc. or pin them to the taskbar on the interface using the Advanced button. Besides, if you want to do an online search, you will need to sign into a Hotmail, Live ID, or MSN account. One single sign-in will automatically sign you into all the Microsoft accounts. Thus you need not individually sign in to each account to check for or search emails etc.
3. Windows Narrator – Now Windows 8 has introduced something for less-advanced, non-geek users, or users with vision or hearing impairments and that is Windows Narrator. The useful app walks you through the installation procedure via on-screen instructions or voice commands. You can now talk to the voice assistant to get the job done.

The multi-lingual tool will read for you and respond to all your commands to help you perform the installation or open or launch any application. If your vision is little challenged, you can enlarge the graphics and text to help yourself. You can even adjust the contrast settings to make the display more comfortable and clear.
